he Golden State Warriors had gone after mostly midlevel players in their attempts to trade guard Monta Ellis.

But with everyone vying for the attention of Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard these days, they decided to take a shot at the most sought after big man in the NBA, according to a tweet from Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress.

“The Dwight Howard sweepstakes have begun. Golden State offered Monta Ellis, Andris Biedrins and Ekpe Udoh. Unlikely that’ll get it done,” Givony tweeted Saturday.

Howard becomes a free agent at the end of the 2011-12 season, along with other big names like Chris Paul and Deron Williams.

The center’s contract situation has been under constant scrutiny for the better part of two seasons, mainly because Howard did not sign an extension and remains interested in exploring free agency.

Orlando made a big trade last season to bring in Hedo Turkoglu and Gilbert Arenas, showing that they are more interested in shaping around Howard than they are moving him. Many around the league expect the Magic to continue trying to impress Howard, not unload him to another team.
