Romania defeated Germany for the first time in 36 years after a spectacular first-half rampage, which included two goals from Ionel Danciulescu and a sparkling finish by Razvan Rat, gave them a commanding early lead. Germany limited the damage in the second period but by then the home fans were already celebrating a famous victory.

Kahn helpless
Germany coach Rudi Völler started the game with under-pressure goalkeeper Oliver Kahn, but the captain could do nothing to shore up a defence that looked brittle every time the Romanians came forward. Völler was without injured defender Christian Wörns and could draw little comfort from the centre-back partnership of Jens Jeremies and Carsten Ramelow. The German midfield was without Michael Ballack as well.

Plesan breaks deadlock
Romania wasted no time in putting the visitors under pressure and Kahn was relieved to see Danciulescu head over from eight metres early on. But after 20 minutes, Romania playmaker Mihaita Plesan seized on a loose pass from Fabian Ernst and jinked past three defenders before rifling a left-footed drive high into Kahn's net.

Rat doubles lead
The lead was doubled three minutes later as left-back Rat outpaced Arne Friedrich before lobbing an exquisite chip past Kahn. The Germans were on the ropes but still managed to carve out two half-chances, both of which were squandered by Kevin Kuranyi.

Danciulescu double
Romania provided the knockout blow with two further goals in a three-minute spell as half-time approached. Danciulescu capitalised on poor defending twice, first escaping his marker to toe-poke Florentin Petre's centre after a quickly taken free-kick, then finding space in the area to head Flavius Stoican's cross straight at Kahn from six metres. The beleaguered German captain could only push the ball into his net.

German changes
Völler brought on Paul Freier for the second half and replaced Kahn with VfB Stuttgart goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand. The Romanians continued to control the game, though, and almost made it five but Florentin Petre failed to connect to Stoican's teasing cross. Hildebrand stopped a certain goal by tipping a Petre lob on to the crossbar, then smartly held on to Ionel Ganea's chip from range after Kuranyi had headed one cross over at the other end and side-footed another wide.

Late strikes
Substitute Gheorghe-Gabrie Caramarin had the final word for Romania. He rushed on to Adrian Neaga's delightful lay-off to drill in a fifth goal from eight metres. Germany regained a shred of pride when Philipp Lahm struck a consolation at the back post after more good work by Freier – but by then, the visitors were well beaten.

Romania regret
The result ends an impressive run of form in friendly matches for Germany, who had beaten Croatia and Belgium already this year. Romania can reflect on a fantastic performance but tinged with the regret that the rest of Europe will not see them turn on this kind of style at UEFA EURO 2004™, for which they narrowly failed to qualify. They will be missed in Portugal.

Préparation de l'Euro-2004 de football: l'Allemagne explose en Roumanie

PARIS (AFP) - L'Allemagne a connu une défaillance inattendue en Roumanie, sèchement battue (1-5) par une sélection qui n'est même pas qualifiée pour l'Euro-2004 de football, alors que l'Italie et l'Espagne ont fait match nul (1-1) à Gênes, lors des matches de préparation à l'Euro.

"Il n'y a pas d'excuses pour cette défaite. C'est une honte absolue." Le gardien de but Oliver Kahn, sorti à la mi-temps, n'a pas digéré la première mi-temps désastreuse de l'Allemagne en Roumanie. Menée 4-0 à la pause, la Mannschaft est passée au travers de son match.

Les joueurs allemands, déjà battus 3-0 chez eux par la France il y a moins de six mois, pourront évoquer l'absence de dernière minute de leur meneur de jeu Michael Ballack (mollet) mais les Roumains ont également joué sans leur vedette, l'attaquant de Chelsea Adrian Mutu.

Comme l'Allemagne, la République tchèque n'a pas alimenté son capital confiance en vue de l'Euro, qui débute dans 45 jours au Portugal (12 juin-4 juillet). Les Tchèques, présentés comme les outsiders de la compétition avec leur ballon d'or Pavel Nedved, ont été surpris à domicile par le Japon (0-1).

Après un nul en Italie (2-2) en février puis une défaite en Irlande (1-2) en mars, les Tchèques n'ont toujours pas gagné en 2004.

A Gênes, le grand match de la soirée entre l'Italie et l'Espagne s'est soldé par un nul. Les Espagnols ont ouvert le score en seconde période sur une frappe croisée de Torres (53) mais Christian Vieri a égalisé de la tête pour la Squadra azzurra trois minutes plus tard.

Roberto Baggio, 37 ans, qui honorait sa dernière sélection, a quitté la pelouse à trois minutes de la fin, longuement applaudi par le public italien.

Les Pays-Bas se sont illustrés de leur côté en étrillant la Grèce (4-0), inscrivant leur quatre buts après le repos, alors que la Bulgarie a battu (3-0) le Cameroun, réduit à dix après l'exclusion de Mettomo.

Adversaires au 1er tour de l'Angleterre et de la France, les deux seuls qualifiés de l'Euro qui ne disputaient pas de rencontres amicales mercredi, la Suisse a joliment retourné la situation pour battre la Slovénie (2-1) grâce des buts de Celestini et Hakan Yakin et la Croatie s'est imposée en Macédoine (1-0).

Parmi les autres matches amicaux de la soirée, le Brésil s'est imposé en Hongrie (4-1) alors que la Turquie a battu la Belgique (3-2) à Bruxelles.

Football: la Roumanie humilie

PARIS (Reuters) - L'Allemagne et les Pays-Bas, deux des poids lourds du groupe de la mort de l'Euro 2004, ont connu des fortunes très contrastées mercredi lors d'une grande soirée de match amicaux.

A un mois et demi de l'Euro portugais, la Mannschaft, vice-championne du monde, a été corrigée 5-1 en Roumanie tandis que les Pays-Bas ont facilement disposé de la Grèce 4-0.

"Il n'y a pas d'excuse à avancer pour cette défaite", a dit le gardien et capitaine allemand Oliver Kahn.

L'Allemagne a enregistré sa plus lourde défaite depuis qu'elle s'est inclinée sur le même score contre l'Angleterre en septembre 2001.

"Je n'ai pas de mots. Nous avons été massacrés en première mi-temps", a ajouté Kahn.

Les Roumains ont mené 4-0 à la pause, puis 5-0 à trois minutes du coup de sifflet final avant que Philipp Lahm ne marque le but de la consolation à la 89e minute.

L'avertissement est sérieux avant l'Euro, où les hommes de Rudi Völler affronteront dans le groupe D la Lettonie, tenue en échec 0-0 par l'Islande, la République tchèque et les Pays-Bas.
