U.S. Figure Skating History
Although skating was born in Europe, Americans can be proud of the fact that figure skating, as we know it today, traces its origins directly back to an American – Jackson Haines – who was born in New York in 1840 and died in 1875 in Finland (popular folklore holds that he caught pneumonia during a raging blizzard he encountered while traveling by sled from St. Petersburg to Stockholm; in reality his death was attributed to tuberculosis).
Just before the Civil War, a skating craze, accompanied by a dancing craze, swept America, and during this time, Haines leapt into the limelight with his daring combination of both skating and dance. He was a true revolutionary, for in a country where figure skating had laboriously developed a stiff and rigid style, the free and expressive movements of his virtuoso performances were frowned on, if not actually condemned.
Haines claimed to be the champion of America in 1863; however, at that time many self-proclaimed "championships" were held without any legitimate or official claim to the title, so Haines' title cannot be substantiated. At any rate, the continued cool reception given to him in his own country prompted him to go to Europe, where he was warmly and enthusiastically received. When he arrived in Vienna, he received the warmest reception of all; he was an immediate success. Little wonder, in the home of the graceful Viennese Waltz! It was here, as a direct result of his pioneering performances, that the so-called "International Style of Figure Skating" was born. It wasn't until many years later – in the first decade of this century – that this style finally came home to America.
Although local skating clubs had been formed and competitions held since the middle of the 19th century, the sport functioned informally, and some years were to pass before the formation of the United States Figure Skating Association in 1921 (now known as U.S. Figure Skating). Only then was the machinery established that has guaranteed the growth in this country of the modern, highly-developed sport of figure skating. U.S. Figure Skating is comprised of member clubs, individual members and associate members.
When the association was first formed and became a member of the International Skating Union (ISU), there were seven charter member clubs of U.S. Figure Skating. Now the organization has more than 600 member clubs across the country. Membership in U.S. Figure Skating carries certain privileges and entitles figure skaters to participate in the tests, competitions and exhibitions sponsored by the association.
Until the early '20s, there were no set standards of proficiency; if a skater felt qualified to compete, he/she did so. Today, tests – figure, free skating, moves in the field, pair, dance and synchronized team skating – are the measurement of progress in the various branches of the sport. Official test sessions sanctioned by U.S. Figure Skating are conducted by member clubs for their members and members of collegiate clubs, as well as for individual members. Under certain conditions, ineligible persons and members of other skating associations may also take U.S. Figure Skating official tests.
Competitions on every level are a principal incentive for figure skaters to train, develop and improve their proficiency. By ascending the competition "ladder," competitors registered with U.S. Figure Skating gain entry into international figure skating events – among them the Olympic Winter Games and World Championships. All figure skating competitions in the United States, especially the regional, sectional and U.S. Championships, which are the steps that are ascended to qualify for international competitions, are sanctioned directly or indirectly by U.S. Figure Skating and are conducted by member clubs.
Exhibitions provide exposure for the talents of figure skaters. U.S. Figure Skating member clubs are eligible to hold figure skating exhibitions in the United States with the sanction of U.S. Figure Skating. Most people are aware nowadays of the professional ice shows that tour the world, but how many people know the genesis of this extremely popular form of show business? In the 1920s and '30s, commercial ice shows did not exist. At that time, a few U.S. Figure Skating member clubs regularly mounted ice carnivals – showcases for the top national and international skating talents. Only later, after champions such as Sonja Henie had gained their reputations through these carnivals, did they turn professional and inaugurate the professional shows that have developed into the multimillion-dollar businesses they are today.
A very important function of U.S. Figure Skating has been the financial assistance provided to skaters by the Memorial Fund, which was founded in the wake of the tragic plane crash that took the lives of the entire 1961 U.S. World Figure Skating Team.
The Memorial Fund was conceived as a means to not only honor the memory of the team, but also to give continuing support and assistance to up-and-coming skaters to help them reach the World Championships.
In addition, U.S. Figure Skating publishes SKATING magazine (est. 1923), which provides factual in-depth coverage of the world of skating for sports enthusiasts.
U.S. Figure Skating made its home on the Internet when U.S. Figure Skating Online debuted in 1995 (www.usfigureskating.org). The web site features news, results, ticket information and athlete biographies, and has become a regular stop for an average of 300,000 skating enthusiasts each month.
Figure skating has come a long way since the time Jackson Haines took to the ice, and its continued growth will be assured the support of the American people through U.S. Figure Skating.

Kwan says Meissner new face of figure skating
Michelle Kwan, the nine-time U.S. and five-time world champion, calls Meissner "the new face of figure skating" and says the important thing for her right now is to find ways to stay motivated. "I know Kimmie; we've been staying in touch via e-mail." Kwan said. "The main thing for her is to keep working hard. She's constantly trying new things, new programs and she's staying fresh."

Emily Hughes Withdraws from 2008 U.S. Figure Skating Championships :(
(1/14/08) - 2007 U.S. silver medalist Emily Hughes has withdrawn from the 2008 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Saint Paul, Minn., Jan. 20-27.
Hughes is suffering from a hip injury, which will prevent her not only from competing but also training.
“I'm extremely disappointed to have to miss the U.S. Championships,” Hughes said. “This is a competition I've been looking forward to all season.”
“This injury is just really bad timing,” Hughes continued. “I hope to be able to begin serious training again in four to six weeks.”
Hughes placed seventh at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games and has finished in the top 10 at each of the last two World Championships. In her two Grand Prix assignments this season, Hughes took fourth at both Skate America and Skate Canada.

NewsGregory, Petukhov withdraw from U.S. Championships
Team still recovering from fall at Skate Canada
By U.S. Figure Skating
(01/11/2008) - U.S. ice dancing team Melissa Gregory and Denis Petukhov have withdrawn from the 2008 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Saint Paul, Minn., Jan. 20-27.
The team suffered a fall during the free dance warm-up at Skate Canada and subsequently withdrew from the event. Gregory and Petukhov were performing a rotational lift when he lost his grip, causing them both to fall. Gregory suffered bruises and cuts on her hip, while Petukhov injured his hip and neck. The injuries forced the team to withdraw from the Cup of Russia as well.
"It is with great regret that we have to withdraw from this year's nationals," Gregory said. "When we had our accident at Skate Canada, everyone focused on my injuries, but Denis also suffered injuries when he hit the boards."
"The loss of practice time at this crucial juncture, combined with my unsuccessful efforts to rehabilitate my injured knee, have left us unable to compete at the highest level," Petukhov said. "Our doctor has strongly recommended that we take the time to heal so that we may be back at 100 percent for next season."
The 2008 U.S. Championships will feature reigning U.S. champions Kimmie Meissner, Evan Lysacek, pairs team Brooke Castile and Ben Okolski, and ice dancers Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto.
"We wish every skater at this year's U.S. Championships the best of luck," Petukhov said. "We will continue our physical rehabilitation and look forward to returning for the 2008-09 competitive season."

7 patinatoare din primele 20, (Meissner pe locul 5)
6 patinatori din primii 20,(Lysacek pe locul 4)
5 perechi din primele 20, (Inoue/Baldwin pe locul 6)

Rippon announces coaching change
(01/02/2009) - Adam Rippon, 2008 World Junior champion and 2008 U.S. junior champion, announced today he has ended his nearly two-year professional relationship with coach Nikoli Morozov. Rippon began training with Morozov in February, 2007.
"At this time I feel a change is necessary," Rippon said. "I appreciate everything Nikoli has done for me. I credit him with much of my success."
Rippon will train in Toronto, Canada with two-time Olympic silver medalist (1984, 1988) and eight-time Canadian champion (1981-88) Brian Orser, who also coaches two-time World bronze medalist Yu-Na Kim from Korea.
Under Morozov, Rippon trained alongside reigning Japanese champion Daisuke Takahashi, 2007 World champion Miki Ado and 2007 Japanese silver medalist Nobunari Oda.
Rippon dominated last year's ISU Junior Grand Prix season, winning gold in Romania, silver in Bulgaria and gold at the Grand Prix Final in Gdansk, Poland. Rippon was the first junior to break the 200-point mark in the Final, scoring 203.30 points. He finished the season by winning gold at the U.S. Championships and the World Junior Championships.
Rippon made his debut on the senior Grand Prix circuit this season, finishing eighth at Skate America in Everett, Wash., and setting a season-best score at the Cup of Russia, where he finished fifth.

Fifteen U.S. skaters head to L.A. for world champs
Abbott, Belbin and Agosto lead talented Americans in California
The 2009 ISU World Figure Skating Championships will take place next week in Los Angeles, where the world's best figure skaters will vie for four world titles: ladies, men's, pairs and ice dancing. Fifteen top U.S. skaters will be among them, including the reigning ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final champion Jeremy Abbott, as well as three-time world ice dancing medalists Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto.
The event, which will be broadcast on NBC and Oxygen, takes place March 22-29 at the STAPLES Center in downtown L.A. More than 200 athletes from at least 50 countries will compete for podium spots. For the full list of skaters, please visit www.isu.org.
LADIES
Reigning U.S. champion Alissa Czisny (No. 16 in the icenetwork.com World Figure Skater Rankings) leads the U.S. ladies contingent. Czisny won gold at the 2008 U.S. Collegiate Championships and the 2008 Nebelhorn Trophy and finished third at Skate Canada and fourth at the Cup of Russia.
Czisny will be joined by 2009 U.S. silver medalist Rachael Flatt (No. 10), who will make her first appearance at the senior world championships. She is the 2008 world junior champion and a two-time U.S. silver medalist. She won silver this season at the Cup of Russia and finished fourth at Skate America.
MEN
The U.S. men are a talented trio, headlined by Abbott (No. 3), who became the first American man to bring home the gold from the Grand Prix Final. On top of winning the Cup of China and finishing fourth at the Cup of Russia, he was crowned the 2009 U.S. champion in January.
Abbott will be joined by two-time world bronze medalist Evan Lysacek (No. 7) and 2009 U.S. silver medalist Brandon Mroz (No. 16). Lysacek earned bronze at the 2009 AT&T U.S. Figure Skating Championships and followed that with a silver medal at the 2009 Four Continents Championships. Mroz came in fifth at the Trophée Eric Bompard and seventh at Skate Canada.
PAIRS
The U.S. pairs teams of Keauna McLaughlin and Rockne Brubaker (No. 8) and Caydee Denney and Jeremy Barrett (unranked) will each be making their debuts at the senior world championships. McLaughlin and Brubaker, the 2007 world junior champions, captured their second consecutive U.S. pairs title at the 2009 U.S. Championships. They won silver at Skate America and bronze at Skate Canada. The newly formed team of Denney and Barrett were the surprise silver medalists at the 2009 U.S. Championships.

2006 Olympic silver medalists Belbin and Agosto (No. 5) will return to the competitive circuit for the first time since their withdrawal from the 2008 Grand Prix Final and the 2009 U.S. Championships due to Agosto's back injury. The five-time U.S. champions collected silver medals this season at Skate America and the Cup of China. The veterans are competing in their ninth consecutive world championships; they won silver in 2005 and bronze in 2006 and 2007.
Newly crowned U.S. champions Meryl Davis and Charlie White (No. 3) return to the world championships looking to improve upon last year's sixth-place finish. They brought home bronze from this year's Grand Prix Final and won the gold last month at the Four Continents Championships.
This will be the first world championships appearance for 2008 world junior champions, 2009 U.S. silver medalists and 2009 Four Continents bronze medalists Emily Samuelson and Evan Bates (No. 9). In their first season in the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series, the duo won bronze at the NHK Trophy and came in fourth at Skate America.
THE COMPETITION
Medal contenders in the ladies division include Grand Prix Final champion and reigning world champion Mao Asada (No. 2) of Japan, Grand Prix Final runner-up and Four Continents champion Yu-Na Kim (No. 1) of Korea, and 2008 world silver medalist and 2009 Grand Prix Final bronze medalist Carolina Kostner (No. 3) of Italy.
The men's title is up for grabs with the retirement of 2008 world champion Jeffrey Buttle of Canada. 2008 runner-up and 2007 world champion Brian Joubert (No. 1) of France will look to claim his second world title. He goes up against Four Continents champion Patrick Chan (No. 2) of Canada, as well as Grand Prix Final silver medalist Takahiko Kozuka (No. 5) of Japan.
In pairs, last year's world champions, Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy (No. 1) of Germany, will take on China's Qing Pang and Jian Tong (No. 2), champions at this season's Grand Prix Final and Four Continents Championships.
The Grand Prix Final ice dancing champions and reigning world titlists, Isabelle Delobel and Olivier Schoenfelder (No. 1) of France, withdrew from the competition due to injury. Russians Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin (No. 2) return to the world championships after a one-year hiatus from the event. The Grand Prix Final silver medalists hope to improve upon their fifth-place finish from worlds in 2007.

U.S. figure skaters turn attention to world championships
VANCOUVER — Thirteen will be the magic number for U.S. figure skaters Mirai Nagasu and Rachael Flatt when they compete next month at the world championships in Torino, Italy.
Nagasu, 16, was fourth in the Olympic women's competition that ended Thursday. Flatt, 17, was seventh. The USA had just two women's berths at this Olympics instead of the maximum three because of its placements at the 2009 worlds.
In Torino March 22-28, the USA will again have two women's spots. It can get back up to its accustomed level of three if Nagasu and Flatt at least duplicate their finishes at the Olympics.
Under the international format, a nation gets three spots at the next worlds if the combined finishes of its top two skaters at the previous worlds add up to 13 or less.
At 2009 worlds, Flatt was fifth and Ashley Wagner was 11. The total of their finishes was 16, limiting the USA to two spots at this Olympics and the 2010 worlds.
Getting that third spot back is another step for the USA in development for the next Olympics.
Nagasu, who is from Arcadia, Calif., was sixth after the women's short program. With her fifth in the free skate, she moved up to fourth overall in the total standings.
"After the short program, I was really disappointed," she says. "But after the long and fourth place in my first Olympics and I haven't got to the worlds yet … I think my best years are yet to come."
Nagasu won the U.S. title in 2008, but at age 14 she was too young to compete at worlds.
Flatt, who lives and trains in Colorado Springs, was fifth after the short program. Her seventh in the free skate dropped her to seventh overall. Flatt was marked down on two of her triple flip jumps in the long program. The markdowns surprised her.
"I thought the flips were fine when I watched the playback," she says. "I guess it's just something to work on for worlds. … I'm a little disappointed with my score having both my flips downgraded."
Now it's on to Torino, site of the 2006 Olympics.
"I achieved my goal of giving two solid (Olympic) performances, not only technically but emotionally, I guess," says Flatt.
Says Nagasu, "I'm just savoring every moment, and that's what Kristi Yamaguchi (1992 Olympic champion for the USA) told me to do. Next time, I hope to go for gold."
Back for more:
The favorite for the gold in Torino will be South Korea's Kim Yu-Na, who dominated the field as expected at the Olympics and piled up record scoring totals.
"I'm very happy that I was able to do everything I was doing during my practice," said Kim. "And I'm especially happy about the scores I received. … Everything I wanted to do, I was able to do."
Kim won the 2009 world title. In December, she won her third international Grand Prix title in four years. She illustrates that competing in world championships leading up to an Olympics is beneficial. She was third at the worlds in 2007 and 2008 before winning the gold last year.
Now, she is an Olympic champion, first medalist ever for her nation in Olympic figure skating.
"Actually, I still can't believe that I did what I wanted to do at the Olympics," says Kim. "I've been dreaming about this moment, and I can't believe that this is not a dream anymore."
Recap:
The U.S. won medals in two of the four disciplines, taking gold (Evan Lysacek) in the men's and silver (Meryl Davis and Charlie White) in ice dancing. Canada, Russia, China and Japan also each won two medals.

Miruna, in privinta lui Chock/Zuerlein ne potrivim perfect.:)
http://www.yorkregion.com/sports/article/1033846--ice-dancer-crone-seeks-new-partner
It’s sad to see everything stop at this point, but it wasn’t healthy what was going on between us. We’re still friends and passionate about skating. Maybe, one day, Paul and I will get back together.”

As first reported in the Free Press last week, ice dancers Emily Samuelson and Evan Bates have ended their ice dance partnership, U.S. Figure Skating announced Tuesday.
Samuelson and Bates, two-time U.S. medalists and 2010 Olympians, didn’t compete last season because Bates was recovering from surgery on a severed Achilles tendon. The team moved to the Arctic Figure Skating Club in April 2010 after spending the previous 10 years at the Ann Arbor FSC.
Samuelson and Bates are continuing in ice dance. Bates’ search for a new partner is over: He’ll be teaming up with Madison Chock, a U.S. bronze medalist with former partner Greg Zuerlein (who has retired from competitive skating).

nationalele US; min 3.17.
