Disagreed. Major League Baseball won't grant Pete Rose legendary status because he freakin gambled on games, so Benoit has certainly lost the right to any praise for what he did inside the ring after this.

I don't care if he was on steroids. I wouldn't care if he was huffing paint thinner while repeatedly injecting himself with syringes of bubbling hot crack. There isn't anything that can condone what he did, or even partially deflect the blame off him.
